Christmas Heated Swim and other Events

With the extended heated season ending on 31 October 2018,  we are busy planning some exciting events over the winter including the chance of a Christmas heated swim!

Christmas Heated Swim:

Looking for ideas for a family outing to keep the kids occupied while they are waiting for Santa?  A fun and healthy activity to burn off the extra calories?  And something to do when all the pressies have been unwrapped?

For the first time in the 56 year history of the seafront lido the boilers will be turned on in mid-December so that visitors can enjoy a heated swim over the Christmas period.  The pool will be heated to 28 degrees and there will be one hour time slots between 23  and 27 December.

Tickets for Sunday 23 December until Boxing Day are available now from Eventbrite

Other seasonal events:

In the meantime, we are having a pool party for Halloween and our ever popular Portishead Popsicle is scheduled for Saturday 15 December.

Halloween party

On 31 October from 4 – 7pm we play host to ghosties, witches and hobgoblins in suitably spooky surroundings – you’ll be splashing around in the pumpkin orange warm water with steam rising around you, while you work up an appetite for the burgers and sausages sizzling on the barbecue.  All this, plus Halloween music, a bar and trick or treat bags for the kids.

STOP PRESS:  Tickets to swim at this event are now sold out, but spectators are welcome (donations appreciated).

Portishead Popsicle 2018 – festive cold water swimming event on Saturday 15 December

If you fancy a festive challenge, a bit of friendly competition and a good excuse to soak in a hot tub, drink mulled wine and eat mince-pies then this is the event for you.

The Portishead Popsicle is a cold water swimming gala where the emphasis is on putting the fun in fundraising. All profits from the event will help to support this community run open air pool, and we actively welcome swimmers who want to take on this challenge to raise funds for causes close to their own hearts.

We are offering the following events to swimmers over the age of 14:

120m relay

4 swimmers each swimming one length of the pool. There is a wetsuit category, and a non-wetsuit category. Teams where some swimmers wear wetsuits, and some don’t, will be entered into the wetsuit category. Teams seeking sponsorship to fundraise for charities or organisations close to their hearts are very welcome, and we’ll ensure your charity gets a mention. Extra points will be awarded for teams swimming in imaginative head-gear. And yes, I have shamelessly stolen that idea from South London Swimming Club at Tooting Bec Lido; their hat races are amazing.

100m event (3 lengths)

Freestyle; results will be posted for male, female, wetsuit and non-wetsuit swimmers, but you are welcome to swim just for fun too

300m event (9 lengths)

Freestyle; results will be posted for male, female, wetsuit and non-wetsuit swimmers, but you are welcome to swim just for fun too

33.3m fly event (1 length)

Butterfly; results will be posted for male, female, wetsuit and non-wetsuit swimmers, but you are welcome to swim just for fun too

Individual Medley (4 lengths) – NEW for 2018

1 length each of butterfly, backstroke, breast stroke and front crawl to be swum in that order; results will be posted for male, female, wetsuit and non-wetsuit swimmers, but you are welcome to swim just for fun too

1km (30 lengths)

Ticket price will include a lap-counter, each swimmer will need to bring their own observer to monitor you the swim and assist during recovery. If you wish to use this event as a qualifier swim you are responsible for ensuring that you meet the requirements of your qualifier in terms of kit, water temperature and observer. In the unlikely event that the temperature does not fall to meet requirements you will be welcome to swim your distance anyway. It’s all good training! This event is also perfect for swimmers building up their time / distance in cold water as the swimmer sets the distance they want to achieve on the day. There is no pressure for anybody to swim the full distance, we respect decisions swimmers make to keep themselves safe. If your lap-counter and / or observer are in any way concerned about they will ask you to leave the water. Their decision on that is final, and you must co-operate.

There will be hot tubs available for a warming soak afterwards, mulled wine and other hot drinks available and a variety of hot and cold snacks. Spectators are very welcome, free of charge, and they’ll have a great view of your swim from our terraces.

There will also be a lane available for spur of the moment dippers and swimmers, who can simply arrive and pay on the day. These swimmers should note, however, that swimmers who have paid and entered in advance will be prioritised for use of the hot-tubs if they become over-crowded.

ENTRIES CLOSE ON 7TH DECEMBER.  A few tickets are still available on Eventbrite, but spectators are welcome.
