7th Annual Inter Schools Gala 12 July 2018

For the 7th year running all five Portishead Junior Schools entered teams from Years 3 to 6 in our Annual Inter Schools Gala  and competed in heats and finals to win the coveted Arthur Grannan Champions Cup.

Despite the early morning rain, 250 children lined up to race in 88 races which concluded with the very popular Year Team Relay Races . All schools swam very competitive races with the competition being the closest it has been since the event began in 2012. But the undefeated champions for the 7th year running were Highdown Junior school  who won a total of 19 Gold, 12 Silver and 13 Bronze medal positions. The poor weather led to initial doubt as to whether the event could go ahead; however their  enthusiasm from the outset clearly showed the organizers that Portishead children don’t mind a bit of rain.

This annual event at the open air pool is the only opportunity provided for all the town’s junior schools to be able to experience a competitive gala. The students demonstrate fantastic team spirit every year and clearly enjoy the chance to represent their schools competitively .

The organising and planning always starts months in advance of the event,  and requires a group of more than 30 volunteers on the day to make sure things run smoothly. Portishead Rotary Club, Pool volunteers and staff support the qualified referee, judges and officials from Backwell and Clevedon swimming clubs and Clevedon Athletic Club.  Each competing swimmer receives a certificate of excellence that is donated from local estate agents Reeds Raines . The 190 medals awarded are provided by the Rotary Club of Portishead and were presented this year by the chair of Portishead Town Council,  Peter Mitchell.
