6th Annual Inter Schools Gala 2017

Thursday 13  July was a perfect summer day for our  Annual  Inter Schools Gala. This is the sixth  year the event has run,  starting with the Mini Olympics in 2012 to coincide with the London Olympics, and the event has grown in popularity year on year.  It is now one of the highlights of the school year in Portishead,  with all five junior schools in the town – Highdown, Trinity, St Josephs, St Peters and Portishead Primary – entering teams from years 3 to 6 who compete to win the coveted Arthur Grannan Champions’ Cup.

Over 250 children swam in a total of 88 races, the climax of which was the exciting Team Year Relay race,  ably MCd for the second year running by Pool volunteerTony Walmsley and cheered on by their friends and families.  All schools swam competitive races but the champions for the sixth year running were Highdown Junior School pupils, who achieved 63 Gold, 24 Silver and 14 Bronze medals. As always, there were some outstanding races and performances and it’s a wonderful opportunity for the junior school children of Portishead to be able to experience a competitive gala.  All the children demonstrate fantastic team spirit and  clearly enjoy the chance to represent their schools.

The organizing and planning each year starts months in advance of the Annual Inter Schools Gala.  In order to ensure the day is a success it requires a group of over 30 volunteers .   Rotary Club and Pool volunteers and staff support the qualified referee, judges and officials from Backwell and Clevedon swimming clubs and Clevedon Athletic Club . Each competing swimmer receives a certificate of excellence that is donated by local Estate Agents Reeds Raines . The 190 placed winners receive medals provided by the Rotary Club of Portishead and presented by the chair of Portishead Town Council Lesley Cottrell.
